BMW has introduced a new, lower cost version of the i4, and it’s got the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range in its sights.
The i4 eDrive35 serves as a new entry-level version of the brand’s all-electric four-door coupe, with a smaller battery but crucially, a smaller price tag than any i4 variant we’ve seen so far. It’s available from £49,995 in Sport trim, though racier looking and higher equipped M Sport versions are also available.
It means that the i4’s basic price falls below the £50k mark for the first time, but it’s still a more expensive proposition than two of its main rivals - the Model 3 as well as the recently updated, longer-range Polestar 2.
Powering the eDrive35 variant of the i4 is a slim battery with a usable capacity of 66kWh. Until now, the other two i4 variants - the eDrive40 and M50 - have come equipped with an 81kWh pack.
Entry-level eDrive35 is still offered in sporty M Sport trim
BMW claims a maximum range of 299 miles under WLTP certification for the new eDrive35. Its single electric motor is less powerful than the one used on the eDrive40 model, rated at 282bhp with 400Nm of torque. But it’s still a quick car by any standards, achieving 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds.
And it should charge quickly enough too. It can’t match the 200kW levels offered by its more powerful and longer range siblings, but a rapid charge capability of 180kW shouldn’t be sniffed at. Sport models come equipped with LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, as well as a black cloth/Sensatec (man-made leather) upholstery with heated front seats.
Opting for the M Sport version adds sportier styling as well as ‘High-gloss Shadowline’ trim detailing and more aerodynamic wheels. The interior changes to a combination of Alcantara and Sensatec with black and blue contrast stitching.
Order books are open now with first deliveries coming in summer 2023.
