BMW has teased its new i5 electric saloon by releasing pictures of disguised prototypes testing in wintery conditions. It is still keeping other details close to its chest however, until nearer the car’s launch in October.
Although clothed in disguise wrapping, it’s clear that the i5 is more restrained than the i4, i7 and iX, perhaps indicating that BMW’s styling department has been burned by reaction to the controversial ‘nostril’ grille shape.
The car will be aimed squarely at Mercedes’ EQE and the Tesla Model S, along with a slew of SUV shaped rivals.
Like the smaller i4, the i5 will share its body with petrol and hybrid models from the new 5-Series range. It is likely to also share its battery and motor options with the i4 and i7, with range figures and charging speeds which will be competitive with its rivals.
The i5 will initially be available as a saloon, with a Touring estate version following later in 2024.
