Could this be the future of eCamping? American camper firm Campworks has unveiled a new caravan that looks perfect for the electric car owner looking to go on an off-grid adventure. The new solar-powered NS-1 is available to buy (although only in the US for now) with its maker claiming it to be the first of its kind in the world.
The pod-style caravan comes as standard with a 5.5kWh battery (upgradable to 11kWh) and a 240 watt panel that can generate up to 1kWh of energy on a sunny day. Those looking to go truly off-grid can opt for an additional 600 watt panel that can add up to 3.7kWh to the pack on a sunny day. The energy stored in the pack can be used to either power a small pop-out kitchenette on the side of the caravan or can be sent to the tow vehicle’s traction battery.
In total, the NS-1 can handle an additional 1600 watts of solar power, allowing owners with access to additional panels to recharge the pack (and their tow car) even faster. Running at full solar capacity, the NS-1 can generate up to 8.2kWh of energy per day. In theory this would allow campers to arrive at a site with an empty battery and leave (albeit some days later) with a full pack.
