Could this be the future of eCamping? American camper firm Campworks has unveiled a new caravan that looks perfect for the electric car owner looking to go on an off-grid adventure. The new solar-powered NS-1 is available to buy (although only in the US for now) with its maker claiming it to be the first of its kind in the world.

The pod-style caravan comes as standard with a 5.5kWh battery (upgradable to 11kWh) and a 240 watt panel that can generate up to 1kWh of energy on a sunny day. Those looking to go truly off-grid can opt for an additional 600 watt panel that can add up to 3.7kWh to the pack on a sunny day. The energy stored in the pack can be used to either power a small pop-out kitchenette on the side of the caravan or can be sent to the tow vehicle’s traction battery.

In total, the NS-1 can handle an additional 1600 watts of solar power, allowing owners with access to additional panels to recharge the pack (and their tow car) even faster. Running at full solar capacity, the NS-1 can generate up to 8.2kWh of energy per day. In theory this would allow campers to arrive at a site with an empty battery and leave (albeit some days later) with a full pack.

The NS-1’s electrical system runs at 240 volts and has a maximum load of 5kW, which means that even heavy duty appliances can be run safety from the pack. In addition to the solar system, the NS-1’s pack can be topped up from a domestic plug.

In terms of design, the NS-1 features axle-less suspension, steel plated under body, and 31-inch off-road tyres that provide 50cm of ground clearance. The built-in kitchen features  2.7 metre of countertop space, an electric induction, dual-burner cooktop, a cookware storage drawer, and LED counter top lighting for night time cooking. Campers can also enjoy a full air-conditioned sleep area thanks to a 1500 Btu A/C unit, 1500W resistive electric heater and Tri-Zone ventilation with exhaust fans for optimal airflow. A roof test can be added for additional storage and sleeping areas.

US customers can order an NS-1 for $65,000 (around £56,000) with deliveries expected by the end of the year.
