Citroen is going to get radical with the next C5 Aircross, due in 2026 and previewed at the Paris Motor Show this week as a dramatic-looking concept car which is said to be “95%” close to the final car.

The C-segment SUV is built on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform which is also used in the Peugeot e-3008 and Vauxhall Grandland. It will be offered with internal combustion, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. It is 4.65m long - 15cm bigger than the current C5 Aircross – but just 1.66m high, giving it a more streamlined shape to reduce drag. This promises to extend the range, meaning the large battery versions could top 450 miles on a charge.

The other priority for the designers is interior space, with the shape promising a comfortable experience for families.

Breaking from the usual softer designs, the new C5 Aircross has distinctive styling which is the work of former BMW stylist Pierre Leclercq.

At the front, the three-point lights, feature in the brand’s latest models, consists of slender segments that enhance the car’s width. At the rear, the designers have reinterpreted the three-point light signature to fit the model. Two light points extend from the body side moulding, appearing to float like fins. This unit, called Citroën Light Wings, also aids in managing aerodynamics by guiding airflow. The curved area near the rear bumper is also designed so that, depending on speed, the airflow that joins partly reverses the drag and creates thrust. The roof has also been hollowed out, and integrated flaps and air inlets further enhance aerodynamic performance.

The interior has not yet been shown, but Citroen say it has been designed as a “wellness area” resembling a lounge, allowing five occupants to relax and travel in comfort. More details will be revealed in 2025, before the car goes on sale in 2026.
