Hot on the heels of the launch of the Cyberster, MG has stolen Ford’s Capri thunder with a proper all-electric coupe.
To celebrate MG’s 100 Anniversary, its designers have created the Cyber GTS concept, which is essentially a hard top coupe version of the existing Cyberster. Although it’s not confirmed, the company bosses have hinted that the car will go into production in time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the classic MGB GT in 2025. This contrasts with Ford's use of an iconic name on a car which bears no relation to the classic version.
Although the MG concept car’s windows are heavily tinted to prevent us seeing the interior, the designers say it will be a proper four seater, with enough room in the back for adults to be reasonably comfortable. This has meant the roof line takes a higher line than the roadster’s hood.
The rest of the car and the mechanicals are identical to the Cyberster, including the rear-wheel-drive layout, giving 335bhp and a 77kWh battery. It’s expected the production car will also offer a twin motor version with 503bhp.
The colour of the concept is said to evoke the MGC GTS Sebring which secured the highest ever factory MG placings at the famous 12 hour race in 1968 in the prototype class. Just six examples were made and the car nicknamed ‘Mable’, driven by the legendary Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges, finished in 10th place overall.
MG also revealed the slightly more mundane but quite important HS plug-in hybrid. It has been a surprise hit in the UK and a top ten best-selling car in 2024.
The new PHEV powertrain, pairs a 142ps 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 154kW electric motor, giving a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds.
The motor draws power from a 24.7kWh battery to deliver an electric-only driving range of up to 75 miles. Crucially this offers UK company car drivers a 5% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rate.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new MG HS is 14mm wider at 1,890mm and 45mm longer at 4,670mm yet the height is 30mm lower. The wheelbase has been lengthened by 45mm to 2,765mm, enhancing interior space. Boot capacity has increased by 44 litres to a maximum of 507 litres.
The new generation of HS PHEVs are priced from £31,495 and are covered by a 7-year/80,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty.
