French car brand DS channels Chanel with new naming strategy

Ahead of the unveiling of its upcoming new flagship SUV, Stellantis’ DS brand has revealed a perfume-like naming strategy to cement its French luxury credentials.

The new N°8 (pronounced ‘Number 8’, like the perfumes from Chanel) introduces the ‘N°’ naming convention for the next generation of models for DS.

The teaser picture shows the ‘°’ is the badge is designed in the form of a diamond tip, said to be symbolic of elegance and class.

All future DS cars will follow this new naming strategy, with the number corresponding to the size and segment of the model. Hopefully there will not be a N°2 in the plan, or schoolchildren will mercilessly tease owners.

The company has also revealed part of the interior of the N°8, and it looks pretty radical, with a ‘X’ spoked steering wheel and bold use of materials such as Alcantara and champagne-coloured metal finishes. DS says the design is inspired by boats, with a door trim which envelops the occupants and includes the sound system and lighting in an innovative way.

The N°8 is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 3008, which should mean it has a range of more than 450 miles in the top spec version with a 97.2kWh battery. It will be offered with both two and four-wheel-drive and also with a smaller 74kWh battery.

Prices have yet to be announced, but the DS is aimed at rivals such as the Audi Q6, Tesla Model Y and Polestar 4. The full car will be revealed on December 12th before going on sale in mid 2025.
