Genesis goes all-electric… but plans combustion hybrids for the future. Yeah, we're confused, too.

Genesis has confirmed it will transition to an all-electric brand this year, phasing out its internal combustion engine (ICE) models. The premium Korean marque will offer three fully electric models in the UK, starting with the electrified G80 saloon, which arrives in Q2 with an extended wheelbase and improved range.

The electrified GV70 – a C-segment SUV – is set for a mid-cycle update, bringing a range boost and a fresh design, with availability slated for mid-2025. Meanwhile, the GV60 – Genesis’s first model built on a dedicated EV platform – benefits from a styling overhaul, featuring redesigned bumpers, headlights and wheels.

All three models have been restyled and re-engineered with upgraded battery performance, extended range and enhanced standard equipment, according to Genesis.

The brand, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, first announced its electric-only ambitions in 2021. Now, it says this shift forms the foundation of its long-term strategy.

Future plans include introducing new EV models, entering fresh segments and rolling out the high-performance GV60 Magma.

However, while the announcement will please electric car fans, brand bosses have made clear that the internal combustion engine is set to make a return with new hybrids already under development. Genesis Motor UK brand director Jonny Miller said: “Since launching in the UK, Genesis has been at the forefront of premium electrification. As a brand, we’ve built our reputation on award-winning cars and customer service excellence. We are committed to responding to customer demand, and our shift to an electric range, with hybrid models to follow, is the right step forward.”
