Gridserve to the rescue for motorway charging

Gridserve is continuing its mission to rescue the motorway charging network, announcing today that it is to open 20 ‘Electric Hubs’ by the Spring of 2022.

Each will feature six to 12 ultra high-power 350kW chargers with contactless payment. In the next phase a further 50 additional ‘Electric Hub’ sites will follow.

Gridserve has been rejuvenating the aged motorway charging network it inherited from the Ecotricity Electric Highway network in June 2021. Since the acquisition, GRIDSERVE has replaced the 300+ existing motorway chargers and installed 130 additional AC chargers to cater for all types of electric car.

In addition there will be two new Electric Forecourts: a flagship site at Gatwick Airport, and another in Norwich. Several sites will follow in 2023, with plans already approved in Uckfield, Gateshead, Plymouth and Bromborough.

The Gatwick forecourt will be located on the approach to the South Terminal and adjacent to the M23. The site is due to open in autumn 2022 and will enable 36 cars to be charged simultaneously. It will host a café, waiting lounge, convenience supermarket, children’s play area and a dedicated educational space to increase awareness around electric vehicles.

As with all of Gridserve’s chargers, the site will also be supplied with low cost, 100% renewable net zero carbon energy generated by solar farms.

The Norwich Electric Forecourt is scheduled to open in April 2022, and will mirror the set up at Gatwick.
