MG has revealed the replacement for its big selling ZS EV in China, and it is due to go on sale in the UK in April 2025.
The all-new model, which is likely to use the ES5 name in the UK rather than the ZS badge, shares its hardware with the MG4, which means rear wheel drive and two sizes of battery – 49kWh and 64kWh, giving a range of around 210 and 280 miles.
The interior and dynamics of the car are said to be a ‘step change’ from the current model.
As you might expect from an MG it will be good value, which prices around the same level as the outgoing ZS at £30,000 for the cheapest model.
As the ES5 uses the same platform as the MG 4, it will also be able to use a dual-motor powertrain, which is likely to lead to an all-wheel-drive version.
MG executive Guy Pigounakis has revealed that there are some real bargains for customers willing to stick with the run-out versions of the old model ZS and 5 estate however. He said: “We looked at the incentives we would need to help sales, such as low rate finance and bonuses and were amazed to find that it added up to around £10,000 per car. So we thought we would see what happened if we just took £10,000 off the price instead. It meant demand from private buyers shot up and we’ve nearly sold out.”
