Official images of the all new MG hatchback, due to be released in the UK later this year, have been released on the brand’s official WeChat account in China.
The post claims that the new Focus-sized hatchback will be fully-electric, rear-wheel drive, and capable of completing the 0-62mph sprint in four seconds – that’s faster than supercars such as the Porsche 911.
Originally due to be unveiled at April’s delayed Beijing Auto Show, the aggressively styled new model is called Mulan in China but is expected to use a different name in the UK. The obvious choice would be MG4, but the number 4 is considered unlucky in China, so MG may stick with Mulan in Europe or choose another option.
The company’s WeChat post gives very little away in terms of details, but we do know from MG’s previous teaser information that the new car will be 4.3-metres long. The brand has, however, confirmed the use of a ‘high-density’ battery which is slimmer than normal and is claimed to make the cabin more spacious as a result.
The Mulan pictures were revealed on MG's social media channels in China The images reveal that 5G connectivity and up to level 3 autonomous driving are possible, although this level of assisted driving isn’t yet legal on UK roads so this could be a China-only feature for now.
Unlike the MG5 and ZS, which have been criticised for having bland styling, the Mulan is dramatically styled, with a pointed nose and heavily sculpted rear end full-width LED light bar and distinctive Y-shaped taillights.A full-length panoramic roof should make for an airy cabin and two-tone paint can also be specified to make the roof a different colour to the main body.
MG also say the Mulan will have sophisticated 5-link rear suspension, which should give it competitive driving dynamics.
There is no word on prices or other technical details yet, but the car is likely to slot in at around the same level as the MG5, starting at around £26,000. MG is expected to reveal the car fully in late June, with the first cars arriving in the UK in September.
