Nio is planning to introduce its range of electric cars to the UK next year but has warned that it needs to have enough of its battery swap stations operational before sales start. The Chinese brand is the only electric car maker that offers drivers the opportunity to exchange batteries at special swap stations instead of recharging them at a public charger.
Although the technology has been rolled out in several European markets including Norway and the Netherlands, the brand has yet to officially commit to a UK launch date. Unlike other Chinese electric brands such as Ora and BYD, Nio is planning to introduce a direct sales model in the UK with a number of bespoke Nio stores around the UK.
The convenience of battery swap stations – which allows drivers to switch a depleted pack for a fully charged one in around five minutes – will be a key part of Nio’s sales pitch when the brand arrives. Bosses are keen to have a network already in place ahead of the launch so as many buyers as possible can take advantage of the tech. However, the complexity of setting up the network, securing sites and grid connections means that the brand is unlikely to officially arrive in the UK for another year.
Nio will sell its cars in the UK with battery lease or with the option to own the pack outright. This sales model, according to Nio allows the brand to offer a lower list price for its cars and removes the concerns over the longevity of the battery.
Nio currently sells five different models in Europe, the ET5 saloon and estate, EL6 SUV, ET7 saloon and EL7 SUV. Prices in the Netherlands start at the UK equivalent of £43,000 for outright purchase with a full subscription plan starting at £902 per month. Customers opting for outright purchase have the option of paying either an additional £10,260 to buy the battery or take out a lease at £144 per month.
The brand has yet to confirm which model will come to the UK first. It is understood that while none of the current range was designed with right-hand drive markets in mind, the brand’s newest model, the EL6 is most likely to spearhead UK launch activities.
