Nissan has revealed three new all-electric concept cars, including a model which points the way to the all-new Leaf. The company has also said it will be introducing solid state battery technology from 2028, which will make power packs cheaper, more compact and faster to charge. 

It will launch 15 new electric cars by 2030 as the company strives to regain the lead in electric vehicles. It revealed four concepts, including one which it described as being for the ‘near future’. 

This Chill Out design study will be built in Sunderland and insiders have hinted that in will be the replacement for the Leaf in late 2022.The advances in battery technology are potentially big news. Nissan says it will continue to evolve its existing lithium-ion battery tech and introduce cobalt-free technology. 

This will be better for the environment but will also bring down the cost by 65% by mid 2028.The company will then launch all-solid-state batteries by the same time. Nissan says it will reduce charging time by two thirds, while making electric cars cost the same to build as a petrol model. The other concept – which aren’t described as near term – are a pick up truck, a two-seater roadster and a small ‘crossover’ SUV which could become the next generation Juke.

All of the models also feature a 'disappearing' steering wheel which retracts into the dashboard when the ProPilot autonomous drive function is switched on.
