No looking back - Polestar loses the rear window with new 4 SUV

Polestar has revealed the latest model in its all-electric line-up – the 4. Described as a performance SUV coupé, it is positioned between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price.

The design includes controversially eliminating the rear window, although there is a standard full-length glass roof which stretches beyond the rear occupants’ heads. The rear-view mirror is replaced by a high-definition screen that shows a feed from a roof-mounted rear camera. This is claimed to enable a far wider field of view than most modern cars.

“With Polestar 4 we have taken a fundamental new approach to SUV coupé design. Rather than simply modifying an existing SUV, giving it a faster roofline and as a result, compromising elements like rear headroom and comfort, we have designed Polestar 4 from the ground up as a new breed of SUV coupé that celebrates rear occupant comfort and experience,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

The car’s overall length is 4,839 mm, width is 2,139 mm and height is 1,544 mm – that’s longer, wider and lower than a Tesla Model Y. This is said to create a spacious interior, especially in the rear evident in the rear, where occupants are treated to reclining seats.

The Polestar 4 will also be the fastest production car the brand has ever developed. Both dual and single motor versions will be available, with single-motor versions featuring rear-wheel drive. With the twin motor, the 0-62 mph sprint takes just 3.8 seconds with a maximum power output of 534 bhp – meaning it outguns the Performance version of the Tesla.

A 94 kWh battery is fitted to both available versions. The Dual Motor has a preliminary range target of up to 350 miles on the WLTP cycle. The Long Range single motor version features a 268bhp motor at the rear and preliminary range target of up to 372 miles.

The 4 will use a Google-based operating system for the infotainment

Up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging is included for all versions, and bi-directional charging is included, with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. A heat pump is fitted as standard, allowing the car to capitalise on ambient heat when preconditioning the cabin and battery.

The 4 also has a 500 litre boot, a 15 litre frunk and a towing capacity of between 1,500 and 2,000kg.

The Polestar 4 will launch first in China, with a UK launch planned for early 2024. Prices are expected to start from £55,000.

The rear window is replaced by a camera, but a full-length glass roof means the interior is light
