Not quite ready for a full EV but want the lowest company car tax possible? Škoda has announced its new Suberb PHEV which has a bigger battery, allowing an 84 mile range. This safely puts it in the 5% benefit-in-kind category for company car drivers, potentially saving them thousands per year versus a diesel and costing just a few hundred more than a pure electric car. Many long-distance drivers might consider that a price worth paying.
For example, the Skoda driver earning enough to be a 40% tax payer would pay £994 in the 2025/26 tax year for having use of the new Suberb, which is only available as an estate. A BMW 320d Touring would cost £5,905, while a fully electric Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer would be £626.
The new Superb, which is priced from £41,465
The Superb’s drivetrain consists of a 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor feeding directly to a six-speed DSG gearbox. The petrol engine develops 150PS while the electric motor is capable of producing 116PS. The combined system output of the two power sources is 204PS.
The motor is also used to start the engine and replaces the traditional alternator.
It is powered by a 25.7kWh battery pack (19.7kWh usable) located under the rear seats, which is almost twice the capacity of the first-generation 13kWh battery.
In E-mode, it has an all-electric driving range of up to 84 miles, 2 miles more than the similarly-powered new VW Passat PHEV. It’s a significant increase on the previous model’s 35 mile range.
The Superb also has the ability to use high-speed DC rapid chargers for the first time.
The new charging ports have been relocated from the front grille to the front wing, making it easier to access DC rapid chargers. With a peak speed of 50kW, the Superb iV’s pack can be charged from 10-80% in around 26 minutes. As with the previous model, it can also be charged on an AC supply at a maximum charge rate of up to 11kW, giving a 10-80% charge in around 2hrs 30 minutes.
The Superb iV is available order in estate form only and comes with the option of three trim levels: SE Technology, SE L and Laurin & Klement. The SE Technology costs from £41,465, the SE L is £44,820 and the poshest L&K is £48,540.
