Land Rover has teased the first details of the Range Rover Electric, sharing close-up images and a handful of technical details of its first purely electric model.
The new model is not expected to be launched until later next year but the luxury SUV maker has already opened order books in anticipation of high demand.
While there’s no word on the powertrain, Land Rover has said that the Range Rover Electric will offer the same performance as a flagship V8 model. Since the current V8 Range Rover SV produces 607bhp and can cover the 0-62mph sprint in 4.5 seconds, that means the electric version should be pretty potent.
It will also, says Land Rover, be the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever, with specially configured active noise cancellation to match the electric powertrain.
EV badging will be subtle And electrification won’t rob the Rangey of its off-road appeal. Land Rover is promising that the Range Rover Electric’s all-terrain capabilities will match the expectations of any car wearing the green oval. A wading depth of 850mm is one of the first firm details confirmed and the electric all-wheel-drive system should provide plenty of torque for tackling rough terrain.
There’s no word on battery capacity but we’d expect at least 100kWh to keep this big beast moving on long journeys. We do know that it sits on 800V architecture, which should allow for ultra-rapid 350kW DC charging, and Land Rover says energy partnerships will mean “effortless charging”.
It’s too early for Land Rover to be talking about prices but even an entry-level mild hybrid diesel is £103,720 and plug-in petrol versions start at £135k, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the fully electric version weighing in at north of £150,000.
The new model will be built in Solihull alongside ICE versions and will use batteries and electric drive units assembled at JLR’s new Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton.
