MG is returning to the brand’s roots with a two-seat roadster which is due to go on sale in time for summer 2024.

The company has finally revealed the production version of its all-electric Cyberster - and it won’t be the affordable roadster many had been expecting. Instead the two-seat drop top is the size of a Porsche 911 and will have the performance to match supercars too.

Although official details are sparse, the photos show that the Cyberster is a soft top and features ‘scissor’ style opening doors, like a Lamborghini.

Technical data hasn’t been announced by the company, but it has been forced to reveal some figures to comply with patent laws in the brand’s native China. These show that the car will have four wheel drive and up to 536bhp – more than many supercars. A single motor version is also expected to be offered.

It is also much bigger than many buyers will be expecting. Instead of being a rival for the best-selling Mazda MX-5 or a direct replacement for MG’s successful MGB and MGF, it measures 4,535mm long and 1,913mm wide – the same as much larger, luxury models.

There is no word on price yet either, but the Cyberster is likely to be the most expensive MG by some margin, although it will look decent value compared to a prestige German rival.

Guy Pigounakis, MG Motor UK’s Commercial Director, said: “This is the perfect time to introduce an MG that completely reconnects with our performance DNA and is designed to enthral the driver on every level. MG is all set for an electric, sporting future and it is the perfect way to start celebrating our 100th anniversary.”
