American firm Rivian has bolstered its line-up by revealing a brand new crossover and SUV.
The R2 is the larger of the pair and has its sights set firmly on the Tesla Model Y, while the more raised-hatchback-like R3 crossover will be cheaper and become the new entry-point to Rivian's model range. It'll even spawn a more off-road-focused performance model called the R3X, which will use a tri-motor set-up and feature more rugged styling and equipment.
The R2 and R3 are built on a new mid-size platform, but the R3 is noticeably smaller than the R2 thanks to 135mm being sliced from the wheelbase.
The R3 is the smaller of the two and is a raised-hatchback-like crossover Two battery packs will be on offer, with Rivian claiming they have greater energy density than the packs used in Rivian's R1S SUV and R1T pick-up. The R2 will offer more than 300 miles of range with a 10-80% top-up taking 30 minutes, and both will feature self-driving technology with 11 cameras and five radars.
The R2, the larger and more practical of the two models, features an interior that can fold completely flat, and the glass in the tailgate can open independently.
The R2 is expected to go into production in 2026 with a predicted starting price of $45,000 (£35,300). European sales are expected, although it remains unclear if the car will be converted to right-hand drive for the UK. Rivian hasn't committed to a launch date for the smaller R3.
