Shell has opened its first EV charging hub in the UK in Fulham, London - replacing existing petrol and diesel pumps with nine high-power 175kW charging points. Described by the brand as global pilot, this is the first time the company has converted one of its existing sites to cater solely for electric vehicles.
The site has been completely reconfigured with nine high-powered, ultra-rapid 175kW charge points that accept contactless payments and come with CCS and CHAdeMO connectors. Customers can also start a charge – which costs 49p ker kWh – via the Shell Recharge app by scanning a QR code on the charge unit. The location of the hub can be seen here.
The all-new site features nine 175kW chargers fitted with CCS and CHAdeMO connectors Despite offering ultra-fast charging, the Shell site has been designed to keep electric car drivers comfortable – and dry – during charging sessions. The site is covered by a striking timber canopy that incorporates solar panels and while a Little Waitrose retail unit and Costa Coffee outlet with loos allow drivers to relax and shop while their cars top up.
Shell claims that all the Fulham chargers, plus those at more than 100 Shell forecourts in the UK run on 100% certified renewable electricity.
Commenting on the new site, István Kapitány, Shell’s Global Executive Vice President for Mobility said, “EV drivers are looking for a charging experience that is as fast, convenient and comfortable as possible. This is exactly what Shell Fulham aims to offer. It joins our growing network of Shell Recharge sites at forecourts and other locations, our ubitricity on-street charging network, and our Shell Recharge Solutions for homes and businesses as we increasingly help EV drivers to charge wherever they need it. It also gives us all a glimpse into the future of mobility.”
Chargers accept contactless payment. Drivers can also start a charge via the Shell Recharge app by scanning the QR code Transport Minister Trudy Harrison added, "It's fantastic to see Shell leading the way with their brand-new charging hub, offering EV drivers an easy and rapid charging experience. With more people making the switch to EVs than ever before, this is exactly the type of facility we need to help make the transition as simple as possible for drivers up and down the country. This Government has committed £2.5bn to vehicle grants and infrastructure to support the switch to EVs. In addition to Government efforts, it is equally encouraging to see businesses support the EV transition – and Shell’s new hub is a brilliant example of the UK's huge effort to go-green and reach our important net-zero targets.”
Shell now has 119 Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points on its forecourts in the UK and has plans to grow its charging network to more than 5,000 charge points on forecourts and in new locations by 2025.
Electric car owners will stay dry thanks to the wooden canopy. A cafe and shop are also on-site for driver refuelling
