Skoda has become the latest carmaker to add ChatGPT to its cars.
The Czech brand already has a voice assistant called Laura, but now the AI-based chatbot will be integrated with Laura to allow drivers to better control features like the infotainment, navigation and air conditioning – or even just ask general knowledge questions.
The big benefit to integrating the AI chatbot into its cars, says Skoda, is that it will 'enrich conversations and clear up questions', completely hands-free.
Skoda says ChatGPT will activate when a request by the driver cannot be completed by Laura, and all interactions are 'immediately deleted after processing to ensure the highest standard of data protection'.
Only Skodas based on MEB GP and MQB EVO platforms will receive ChatGPT, though, which includes selected versions of the Enyaq electric SUV, the new-generation Skoda Superb and Kodiaq and the updated Skoda Octavia due later this year.
Klaus Zellmer, Skoda Auto CEO, said: “Enriching Skoda voice assistance with artificial intelligence makes our cars an even better everyday companion. Drivers and passengers will have easy, verbal access to worlds of knowledge while on the road.
"Integrating ChatGPT into our voice assistant Laura is just the latest way that Skoda adapts advanced technology to improve the driving experience. Everything remains hands-free for the driver, and data security remains a priority. I am confident that customers will appreciate this modern new feature."
The announcement comes as Volkswagen confirmed it too will integrate AI into its cars, becoming the first volume carmaker to do so.
ChatGPT is already available on Stellantis's upmarket DS models, DS 3, DS 4, DS 7 and DS 9.
