Skoda has published design sketches of a forthcoming electric racing concept car. Based on the Enyaq electric SUV, the concept is a study in potential sustainable motorsport, says Skoda, while also "enhancing" the firm's "emotional appeal".

The Enyaq RS Race Concept follows on from other electric studies including the Vision GT (built for the Gran Turismo video game) and the Fabia RE-X1.

Using the road car as a base, the RS Race Concept features twin electric motors to give four-wheel drive, and shows off the "scope of possibilities the Volkswagen Group’s Modular electric drive matrix offers in terms of performance", says the firm. It also features a number of exterior enhancements, in particular a large rear wing for extra downforce, while the interior is stripped back to essentials, using lighter materials, and features just two seats.

Daniel Petr, Senior Designer at Skoda Auto, said: “The Skoda Enyaq RS Race is not a design study that will just remain on paper; it is going to be a real car. It will be lower, wider, lighter and most importantly more dynamic. So, it was clear from the start that the design had to be aggressive with strong racing DNA.”

While the sketches hint at a real car, Skoda has revealed the study could lead to elements of the car making their way to other future production cars.

Jaguar also dabbled in electric motorsport with its I-Pace eTrophy series between 2018 and 2020. It used the I-Pace SUV as a base for the I-Pace race cars which were build by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations. It was one-make series featuring 20 cars, and the race supported the FIA Formula E Championship.
