Smart has launched a new, cheaper #1 with a smaller battery and a £31,950 price tag – undercutting rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and Jeep Avenger.
The new model, called the Pro, uses the same single motor, rear-wheel drive drivetrain as the Pro+, but has a 49kWh battery instead of the 62kWh to reduce costs.
The Pro has a WLTP range figure of 193 miles while the other models vary between 260 and 273 miles depending on options such as wheels.
The new Pro also has its DC fast charging capability pegged back to 130kW DC, while the bigger battery models can take 150kW. AC charging is at a maximum of 22kW on the Premium and Brabus, but the new entry level Pro and Pro+ models charge at 7.4kW.
The performance remains surprisingly rapid though - with the Pro getting the same 268bhp output and 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds as the other models.
Standard equipment is decent too, including a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, a 360-degree surround camera, intelligent voice assistance, LED lights and a powered tailgate.
