An electric Toyota Land Cruiser could be gracing our roads soon if a new concept makes it into production.
While Toyota has already introduced a new version of its famous off-roader, the Land Cruiser Se - revealed this week as part of the Japan Mobility Show - ditches that car’s traditional diesel engine in favour of a clean-running battery-powered setup.
And rather than the chunky, go-anywhere design of that ‘regular’ model, the Se is a far more futuristic take on things. There are sharp, modern lines dashed across the car’s exterior while at the back there’s a full-width light bar which become something of a trend across the electric car world.
While the diesel-powered Land Cruiser uses a rugged ladder frame chassis onto which the body is dropped, the Se uses a modern monocoque design which should give it better on-road manners and make it more comfortable over long distances. Inside, you’ll find space for seven people Toyota says that the quiet electric motor helps preserve ‘a comfortable cabin space when driving in urban areas and other on-road situations’.
Though Toyota seems to be leaning towards a more on-road focus for this electric Land Cruiser, the Se still has very short front and rear overhangs which would help it to tackle difficult climbs and descents.
In terms of size, the electric Land Cruiser measures 5,150mm long and 1,990mm wide, which would put it in the same area as the current Land Cruiser which is sold across America and in many parts of the Middle East.
Toyota hasn’t given any full details regarding the Se’s battery specification or range, but expect these to be trickled out shortly.
