Nissan has confirmed final UK pricing and specifications for the electric version of its new Townstar van. The new model replaces the NV200 in Nissan’s line-up and shares its design and mechanical set up with the Renault Kangoo and Mercedes Citan. 

Like its predecessor, the Townstar has been designed to accommodate both a fully electric drive system and a traditional combustion engine. The former is priced from £29,945 for the entry-level short-wheelbase version equipped with a 45kWh battery. Disappointingly, this is more than £10,000 more than the equivalent petrol-engined variant that starts from just £19,475. What’s more, the price includes the £2,500 Government Plug-in grant, making the non-discounted price £32,495.

​Prices for all-electric short-wheelbase examples range upwards to £34,845 for a Tekna+ model. Long-wheelbase all-electric Townstar varies in price from £31,245 (Visia) to £35,845 (Tekna+).​

However, while the price is likely to raise eyebrows among fleet operators, Nissan has been able to undercut the mechanically identical Kangoo E-TECH, which is priced from £33,055 including the Government Grant. 

The battery-powered Townstar is equipped with a 45kWh battery, which is 5kWh bigger than the pack offered in the old NV200. The newcomer has a WLTP range of 183 miles, which is a significant improvement on the 124 miles offered by the eNV200 it replaces. Rapid DC charging (standard on Acenta models and above) can be carried out at speeds of up to 80kW with the connector switching from the eNV200’s CHAdeMO to the more common CCS standard. Electric versions come with an 11kW (Visia grade) or 22kW AC (Acenta grade on) on-board charging system which will be class-leading in its segment. 

In terms of space and carrying ability, the Townstar has a smaller load cube than the eNV200 at 3.3 cu metres (eNV200 was 4.2 cu metres). Payload is set at 600kg for the short wheelbase version, which again is down on the eNV200’s figure of 705kg.   

The Townstar’s load bay comes with a clever swivelling bulkhead and a number of additional storage areas. The load cube is accessed via sliding side doors or the rear ones. At the rear, customers can choose between 60/40 split doors or a single, top-hinged tailgate. 

The new model comes with a range of safety technologies and driver assistance features including Intelligent Emergency Braking, Hands-Free Parking, Intelligent Cruise Control and Around View Monitor (AVM).

The line-up comprises four trim levels: Visia, Acenta, Tekna and Tekna+, combining the very latest technology with enhanced driver assistance.
