The UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure witnessed another year of record growth in 2024, according to Zapmap’s year-end figures. Over 20,000 new charge points were installed, increasing the total to 73,699—a 38% year-on-year rise. The monthly installation rate also climbed, averaging 1,650 points per month, up from 1,400 in 2023.

Key growth was seen in ultra-rapid (150kW+) charging devices, which surged by 84% over the year. These chargers, crucial for quick top-ups during long journeys, now number over 7,000 nationwide. En-route charging hubs with six or more 50kW+ devices also grew, nearly doubling from 264 in 2023 to 537 in 2024, appearing at motorways, retail parks, and farm shops. Across all high-power options, more than 14,000 50kW+ chargers are now available.

Zapmap data highlights broader progress, including a rise in destination chargers, which let drivers recharge while visiting restaurants, hotels, or leisure areas. Over 12,000 new chargers were added to locations like this in 2024. On-street chargers, supporting EV drivers without private parking, saw improvements but remain unevenly distributed; 72% are still concentrated in Greater London. However, government-funded LEVI (Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) projects promise more equitable distribution by late 2025.

Regional disparities persist, with Wales and the North West improving coverage but still lagging. Northern Ireland’s installation rate remains slow, contrasting with nine out of 12 UK regions now having over 1,000 50kW+ chargers.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders reported over 380,000 new pure-electric car sales in 2024, accounting for 19.6% of total new cars, with sales hitting 31% in December. This brought the UK’s EV fleet to 1.36 million, a 39% increase from 2023 and saw the UK surpass Germany to become Europe's largest electric-car market
