​Volkswagen adds plug-in hybrid Tiguan to range​

Volkswagen has opened order books for its new Tiguan plug-in hybrid SUV.

The new PHEV SUV, called eHybrid, is available on three trim levels with prices ranging from £35,515 and rising to £38,120, while the all-important BiK company car tax ratings are between 11% and 13%.

The Tiguan eHybrid uses the same petrol-electric drivetrain as the Golf and Passat GTE models, which pairs a 1.4-litre petrol turbocharged engine with an electric motor.

Just like those two models the Tiguan eHybrid packs 241bhp, while 0-62mph takes 7.5 seconds and the plug-in hybrid SUV tops out at 127mph. CO2 emissions range from 38g/km to 43g/km, while the WLTP-tested fuel economy is between 156.9mpg and 176.6mpg.

The electric motor gets its power from a 10.4kWh battery which takes five hours to fully charge from a three-pin socket, or three hours 40 minutes from a 3.6kW home wallbox or public charger. 

A full battery gives up to 30 miles of pure electric range, says VW, and the driver has a number of different driving modes to choose from, including preserving the battery's charge or charging it while driving. E-Mode locks the car into pure-electric mode and the Tiguan can travel up to 80mph on electric power.

The Life model kicks off the range at £35,515 and gets three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, an eight-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, and LED matrix headlights.

Elegance trim comes in at £37,780 and adds a heated steering wheel, 30-colour ambient lighting, an electric bootlid and hands-free opening, a digital dashboard display along with extra safety equipment including road side recognition and predictive cruise control. R-Line, at £38,120, adds a sporty flavour with beefier bumpers, a rear spoiler, wheel arch extensions and 20-inch alloy wheels.
