Volvo has given its C40 and XC40 Recharge models an engineering update that includes a larger battery, increased range, faster charging and higher power output. The changes form part of the 2024 Model Year update and were spotted on the brand’s consumer website.

Arguably the most interesting part of the update is the switch from front to rear-wheel drive for the entry-level single motor models. Electrifying.com understands that the change has been made to improve efficiency and means that Volvo now uses the same drive layout as many other electric cars including the Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID range, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6. The move will also address some of the criticisms that were levelled at the driving dynamics of the original model, which often struggled to cope with the amount of power channelled through the front axle.

The battery offered in twin motor models has gone up in size from 78kWh to 82kWh with the official WLTP range increasing accordingly. The updated C40 twin motor has a range of 316 miles while the XC40 has gone up to 312 miles. Range figures for the single motor models (which keep the 78kWh pack) rise to 285 miles for the XC40 and 296 miles for the C40. Power output of the single motor version has been upped to 238bhp.

Dual motor versions have also been updated with the torque split between front and rear axles modified. Although the combined total output remains the same at 408bhp, the power produced by the individual motors have been changed. The front generates 163 bhp, while the rear has 245 hp. This is expected to alter the driving balance in favour of sportier, more dynamic responses.

Another significant update applied to 2024 MY cars is an increase in rapid charging speeds. This rises from 135kW to 200kW – an impressive figure for a vehicle using a 400 volt electrical system.

The new range will consist of three trim grades: Core, Plus and Ultimate with all three available with single motor and twin motor options. Prices for the C40 Recharge start from £48,355 OTR while the XC40 Recharge starts from £46,505. Production of UK-specification models is expected to start in August 2023.
