The Government has sparked fury in the automotive industry by axing a grant giving people money off buying electric cars just as fuel prices soar to new record highs.

The Plug-in Car grant, which allowed people to claim £1,500 if buying an electric car costing less than £32,000, was scrapped by ministers yesterday.
