There are so many possible Back to the Future jokes on the cards here that we’ve gone temporarily blank. But suffice to say that the re-birth of the DeLorean motor company (DMC) as a fully-fledged pure electric GT has got us interested. Styled by Italian company ItalDesign, the DeLorean EVolved is a modern re-work of the DMC-12 made famous by Marty McFly in the mid-1980s time-travelling movies, but originally designed by legendary Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also designed the original Lotus Esprit, the Fiat Panda and the Alfa 159 amongst many, many other incredible machines.
It’s a good thing, too; even though the DMC-12 became iconic for its shape-slash-style, it had a rather rubbish petrol engine in the back of it. A tragic case of the mouth very much not matching the trousers, so a smooth and powerful electric drivetrain will hopefully help compliment the even more space-age looks, which have been remixed for 2023.
On that subject - we’ve not seen the whole car yet, just a 20-second teaser video that shows a full-width LED lightbar at the back linking big curved wheelarches, the DeLorean typeface across the rear and some rather slat-tastic back window louvres. Very 1985. The one thing we do know but haven’t yet seen? The car will retain its show-stopping gullwing doors. Oh, and it’ll be at an event called the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the USA for a debut in August.
