Volkswagen reveals its three car trick as it aims to lower electric entry cost

Ever mourned the loss of the Volkwagen eUP!, Skoda Citigo-e or the Seat Mii Electric? Well we do here at electrifying.com, mainly because they were some of the cheapest pure electric cars on the market - and probably just a little bit ahead of their time.

Relatively cheap, back-to-basics and brilliant little urban runabouts, they came with 140+ miles of real-world range, and the kind of relaxed usability that made them absolute stars - a comfortable pair of slippers in a world full of slightly intimidating new tech. But the VW Group has plans. Albeit not for a little while. The Group (which owns ŠKODA and Cupra, along with Audi) has just teased no fewer than three compact electric hatchbacks due for release in 2025.

The Volkswagen version was originally going to be called the ID Life – a mini-hatch that would weigh in at around £20,000 (read our drive here). Electrifying.com understands that the idea has now morphed into something else entirely: instead of the little chunky square that was the Life, VW is now showing what appears to be a mini-me ID.3 or ID.4.

ŠKODA has also previewed a similar style of car - albeit a bit less rounded - and Cupra (the sporty off-shoot of SEAT), has also released out a ghosted preview based on the brand’s UrbanRebel Concept shown last year. We hope the toe-curlingly cheesy name doesn’t make it to production though.

All three cars cars will be based on the same modular MEB platform as the current ID3, Enyaq and Born. The platform was designed to be adaptable, with shorter and longer wheelbases possible. Although no information has been released concerning battery sizes, ranges or prices, bosses are keen to bring all three in for around £25,000 before any grant reductions. To make this possible, the cars are likely to have a smaller battery packs than the existing mid-range cars, albeit with higher density to keep range figures acceptable to buyers.

All three VW Group models will be based on the same underpinnings as the ID.3

Early ID. Life concept has been dropped in favour of a new design
