Taking honours as the best Money Saving Small Family Car for 2023 is the MG4 - and why wouldn’t it?

MG’s got previous when it comes to compact, practical, affordable electric family cars. But even so, the MG4 was one of the best surprises of 2022 when we first drove it, successfully consolidating everything MG’s got right with its electric cars over the past few years into an altogether more impressive, more desirable package.

Its main draw is still arguably its value proposition though. Since launch the price of the entry-level SE model has risen slightly, to £26,995. But it’s still a figure that undercuts petrol powered favourites such as the Ford Focus, while delivering a useful range of 218 miles from its 51kWh battery powered drivetrain.

However, the real value is to be found in the Long Range models, kicking off from £29,495. Equipped with a 64kWh battery pack it delivers an impressive 281 miles of range on a full charge.

Beyond the simple pound-per-mile of range proposition, the MG4 does the family stuff well too. It’s decent to drive, really well equipped for the money - even the entry-level SE car comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity and a suite of driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and automatic high-beam lighting.

And, should anything go wrong, you’ll be covered by a generous seven year warranty as standard. It’s a refreshingly no-nonsense electric family car.
