A British tech startup co-founded by electric car expert Andy Palmer has revealed its first product, the Hilo One electric scooter, developed in conjunction with Lotus.

The Hilo One has a variety of innovative features including a ‘Halo’ illumination system, said to be controlled by AI, to alert pedestrians and other road users of its presence. The Hilo also has a larger 12.5” front wheel to improve stability and control.

Co-founder of Hilo, Dr. Andy Palmer, commented, “E-scooters have faced challenges with safety and public perception. The Hilo One is an e-scooter that addresses these concerns head-on. I believe in the potential of e-scooters to revolutionise urban transportation. I also understand the importance of safety, comfort, and rider experience.”

Other unique characteristics of the Hilo One are haptic feedback and audio signals that integrate with the illumination system. The scooter can also fold for storage at home, in the office, or in a car.

The Hilo One’s displays and apps will also integrate with an electric car and share navigation information and charge states both ways, for users who want to use the scooter for the ‘last-mile’ like a personal park and ride.

Using computer vision AI, the Hilo One alerts the rider to their surroundings and impending dangers through visual, audible and haptic feedback in the handlebars – letting the rider concentrate on riding.

Halo AI powers full perimeter light projection, communicating to other road users and pedestrians if they become dangerously close.

To comply with laws where e-scooters are legal, the Hilo One can reach 15.5 mph. It has a claimed range to 25 miles and is powered by two 350w electric motors.

Indicative pricing for The Hilo One starts from £1,750, but private e-scooters are still illegal to use in public places in the UK. This is expected to be reviewed by the government soon.

The scotter will be priced from £1,750
