Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai Motor Group, has released details of its new Magma performance sub-brand that will rival the likes of Mercedes AMG and BMW’s M division.
The news was announced at the New York International Auto Show, where Genesis bosses confirmed the new models and its plans for the future.
The centrepiece of the reveal was the Genesis GV60 Magma Concept, a pumped-up version of the existing electric GV60 crossover. The concept boasts a lower, wider stance compared to its standard counterpart, hinting at improved handling and agility. Genesis bosses remained tight-lipped on specifics, but the model is likely to feature upgraded battery and motor technology, mirroring the impressive 84.0kWh battery and 641bhp dual-motor setup seen in the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N but with an additional power boost over the Hyundai.
Visually, the Magma concept delivers a more aggressive look. The wider wings house larger wheels designed to channel air for optimal brake cooling while aerodynamic tweaks across the front bumper allow more cooling air to reach the motor and battery.
Intriguingly, Genesis has hinted at a multi-pronged approach for Magma with every model in the current range set to gain a Magma variant. While the GV60 Magma spearheads the electric charge, a non-electric G80 Magma Special with a 3.5-litre V6 is also in the pipeline. Although the brand is likely to offer just the G60 Magma in Europe, the decision to show the G80 confirms that is delaying its switch to being an all-electric brand globally. In 2001, Genesis bosses confirmed that its European operation would only launch electric vehicles from 2025 and aimed to become a 100% zero emission brand by 2030. Last year, Genesis sold 225,189 vehicles last year, of which just under 19,000 were fully electric.
Further details of the GV60 Magma, pricing and specification are expected to be announced later this year.
