Hyundai has upgraded its IONIQ5 with a new, slightly larger 77.4kWh battery along with range enhancements and a few other specification changes, including battery conditioning and video-based digital mirrors.
The new, bigger battery replaces the 72.6 kWh pack which is fitted to current models and will improve the range from the current 298 miles to just over 300, although official figures have not been confirmed. This will be available in addition to the current cheaper 58kWh option.
Hyundai is now not only offering a larger battery and enhanced range, but also a new battery conditioning feature. This will enable the IONIQ5 to automatically adapt its battery temperature to ensure it remains at the optimal level, especially when charging, to improve charging speeds and protect battery health.
The updated IONIQ5 will also be available with video-based digital side mirrors as used on cars such as the Honda e and Audi e-tron, which aim to reduce air resistance while improving visibility.
There is also an extra camera on the back, located just below the rear spoiler, that should give the driver a panoramic rear-facing view of the car. This could help counter owner feedback that the IONIQ5’s lack of rear wiper is a problem in poor weather.
Another new specification feature is the addition of Smart Frequency Dampers, which will make the ride smoother, as well as improve handling.
UK prices and final specifications are yet to be confirmed, but the new model will be available to order from late Spring.
