Toyota has finally been able to restart production of its bx4X SUV after an embarrassing recall caused the company to put the brakes on the launch of its first fully electric car. Sales and production were suspended for three months.
After 2,700 cars had been delivered globally, it was discovered that a bolt which holds the wheel hub to the other suspension components could become loose, causing the wheel to detach. In addition to the hub issue, the company also said it had identified a new problem concerning the airbags, which could cause them to “fail or cause injury” because they had been improperly installed at the factory.
Details of the hub fix are thought to include an additional washer to ensure the nut cannot come loose.
Both issues have also affected the Subaru Solterra, which is essentially a rebadged version of the bZ4x.
Delivery of both cars will recommence in the next two weeks in the UK, and dealers will be allowed to offer test drives.
