Volkswagen will take the fight to low-cost electric city cars like the Dacia Spring with a new budget model, it has confirmed.

The German giant has released a teaser image of a new entry-level electric city car, which is expected to wear the 'ID.1' name and cost around £17,000 when it arrives in 2027. It's likely to use the Volkswagen Group's MEB-entry platform and have a range of around 200 miles on a full charge.

The newcomer will effectively be the replacement for the e-Up and is seen as the Volkswagen Group finally doing battle with other low-cost offerings such as the Dacia Spring and Citroen e-C3, as well as a flow of budget offerings from China.

Thomas Schafer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and head of Brand Group Core said: "The future is electric. In order for electromobility to become widespread, attractive vehicles are needed, especially in the entry-level segment. Our brand promise is: electromobility for all. This promise is now being fulfilled in the Brand Group Core. Despite the attractive price, our vehicles will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality and customer experience."

The 'ID.1' will be part of a wider plan to launch a range of cheaper electric cars by the Volkswagen Group, which will wear VW, Skoda and Cupra badges.

Along with the electric city car, the plan will consist of two small SUVs and two hatchbacks. One of the SUVs has already been revealed in concept form as the Skoda Epiq, while one of the hatches, the Cupra Raval, has also already been shown off.

Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group said: "Generations of people associate the strong brands of Volkswagen Group with their first car – and with affordable mobility. As a group with strong brands, we continue to assume this social responsibility to this day. That’s why I’m pleased that we’re launching a future-oriented project. It’s about entry-level electric mobility from Europe to Europe."

The 'ID.1' will offer the same spirit as the e-Up but will be designed as an EV from the outset
