Motors and Performance
Cupra widened the Born’s model range in 2023, offering more range and performance. The 58kWh and 77kWh come with rear-mounted electric motors giving 201bhp and 228bhp, respectively. Choose the e-Boost option on the 58kWh pack and that rises to 228bhp – the same as the 77kWh as that gets e-Boost as standard. E-Boost comes on all the trim levels; compared to the standard 58kWh model, the 58kWh e-Boost dashes from zero to 62mph 0.7 seconds quicker at 6.6 seconds. Despite the 77kWh having e-Boost as standard, it gets to 62mph in 7.7 seconds due to its heavier weight.
A twin-motor Cupra Born with four-wheel drive could be on the way in 2024.
Drive and Handling
Cupra has done a decent job of sharpening up the responses and although it doesn’t quite feel like an ‘electric GTI’, it delivers a pretty engaging drive. The ride feels firmer but not too harsh while the steering feels sharper and more direct. It’s equally at home on the motorway, although the fatter tyres of the Born does mean the cabin is slightly noisier at higher speeds. The trade off is improved grip when cornering and braking compared to the skinny-tyred ID.3.
