Pricing
The Fiat 500e range is currently made up of four trim levels; the entry-level model is simply called 500 Electric, or there's La Prima, RED and the Giorgio Armani Collector's Edition. All get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with sat nav, 16-inch alloys, keyless entry and start while the RED gets plenty of red trim and detailing, and you're also supporting the (RED) charity, which helps to fight Aids. The posh La Prima by Bocelli adds LED headlights, 17-inch wheels and an upgraded JBL stereo system that's been 'enhanced' by Bocelli, apparently. If you want the 24kWh battery, you'll have to choose between the 500 Electric or the 500 Red, as the La Prima and Armani models are both only available with the longer range battery.
Pricing for the 500 looked very good when it was launched, but with newer, more affordable and longer range rivals now on the market, Fiat has had to fight back with some competitive finance deals and a few price cuts. Even so, it's still not cheap next to the Renault 5, Citroen e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda and various other compact EVs that now serve to make the fashionable 500 look rather pricey...
Running costs
The 500e will be usefully cheaper to fuel than any petrol alternative; charge at home with a cheap, overnight tariff and you’ll be paying under 3p per mile for electricity. For context, a petrol car doing 40mpg will cost around 14p per mile, so you’re cutting fuel bills by up to 80%. Rapid charging, and relying on public kerbside chargers, is a lot more expensive though, and can be more expensive than fuelling a petrol car, so make sure you do your maths before committing. If Fiat could do anything to improve the 500e affordability, it's to bring in better monthly finance costs. The PCP and leasing deals aren't bad, currently, but they could still be better.
The Fiat 500 is one of the cheapest electric cars to insure, falling into Group 18, so this could be a good option for new drivers.
Company car drivers, of course, benefit from extremely low Benefit in Kind company car tax, so the electric Fiat 500 will be much cheaper as a company car than any equivalent petrol or hybrid car.
