It must have been another dodgy phone line when Ginny asked me to come to Frankfurt to check out a new Wagon Wheel. Chocolate, biscuit, marshmallow… I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend an hour and a half at passport control to test the latest version?  But, it appears that I’ve been duped. I’m not going to have the opportunity to stuff my face with biscuits - I’ve actually got to tell you all about this, the new Jeep Wagoneer S.

Here goes, then! The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is a super important car for the brand, as it’s the first fully electric Jeep to go on sale in America and Canada. The Jeep Avenger was the first to arrive in Europe, but that’s so small that it was deemed a bit irrelevant to the American market.

The Wagoneer, however, isn’t small. It’s based on the company’s STLA Large platform, and it’s the company’s flagship large SUV. It’s expected to come to the UK in 2025, and it’ll compete with cars like the Audi Q8 e-tron, Mercedes EQE SUV, Polestar 3 and Tesla Model Y.

Confusingly, it’s also not the only Wagoneer that Jeep makes. There’s already a Jeep Wagoneer in America, which has a big petrol engine. This one is, of course, the electric Jeep Wagoneer S, which gets a totally different platform, interior, styling, a whole heap of power and is actually a completely different model. Just with the same name.

When we say a whole heap of power, we mean A LOT. The Wagoneer S gets 600bhp, dual motor for four-wheel drive, and will do 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds.

Styling and dimensions

You can’t miss that it’s a Jeep, that’s for sure. Check out the grille! It’s a bit narrower than on other Jeeps, but the trademark seven-slot grille is still impossible to miss, and it’s lit up by LEDs, too, plus there’s even more illumination from the light bar above it.

Another trademark Jeep styling cue is the squared off wheelarches, so it is all very on-brand, but I do think it’s also a lot sleeker than any other Jeep. And I like it – it’s very swish, but unmistakably a Jeep. Although having said that, is it also a bit Lexus, or maybe Range Rover-ey at the back, with that wing jutting out and the light bar across the width of the car? I’d say it probably is, although that’s no bad thing.

Interior

This is Jeep’s luxury offering, so you get the big panoramic roof as standard, plus ambient lighting, and there’ll be a 19-speaker sound system as an option. There are plenty of screens, too. Or, to be precise, there’s sort of one screen that goes across the entire width of the dashboard, split into four readouts. One behind the wheel for your speed, and all of that important info (there’s a head-up display, too). In the middle is your main 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with UConnect 5 software, and below that is another screen for climate controls. And the final flourish is a standard screen for the passenger, too.

The two-spoke steering wheel is a really nice modern-retro nod to Jeeps of yore, but to make sure that you don’t forget that you’re in the 21st century, there are door switches, rather than handles. Vegan leather and ambient lighting finishes the whole thing properly.

It's pretty massive inside, too, as you’d expect of a big car like this. Even the tallest of passengers is going to be lounging in comfort in those back seats, although it is a shame that there's no sign of a seven-seat version of the Jeep Wagoneer S, which would make it a proper rival to the Kia EV9.

Boot space

Jeep claims 866-litres of space in the Wagoneer S boot, although that figure will be up to the roofline - rather than the windowline that we normally measure in Europe, so it's not actually as big as the figure sounds. Even so, it's a pretty massive boot, and there's underfloor storage that's ideal for cable storage.

Battery, charging and efficiency

Jeep has confirmed that the Wagoneer S will get a 100kWh lithium-ion NMC battery, which is estimated to achieve a range of around 300 miles, which is a slightly disappointing figure for such a huge battery, and doesn't suggest great efficiency. Having said that, these figures aren't confirmed, and we'll have to wait and see how the Jeep performs when we actually get behind the wheel. It'll rapid charge from 20-80% in around 23 minutes, which suggests a very healthy DC rapid charging rate of 200kW or more.

Price and equipment

There’s not much information confirmed regards the Wagoneer S UK launch, yet, but we expect it to cost from around £65,000 when it does arrive. Equipment is also, predictably, not confirmed. But it’s safe to say that there’ll be lots of it, with leather, tech and luxuries to spare.

Verdict

The Jeep Wagoneer S is a pretty cool car, with tons of space and luxury. But it is a bit disappointing that Jeep is estimating a 300-mile range from such a huge battery, though. Basically, I like it’s style, but the Jeep’s got a lot to prove when it gets to Europe and the UK if it’s really going to make an impact in the electric luxury SUV class.
