Jeep’s characterful Renegade now comes as a PHEV, but it’s pricey and a little unrefined. It’s brilliant off-road, though.

Ginny Says

“The Renegade has always had a bit more honesty about it than other small SUVs. Rather than just being a pumped-up hatchback it does have some real off road ability. By driving one set of wheels with petrol and the other with electric, Jeep has made a hybrid that is efficient and good in the mud.”

Tom Says

“Jeeps with PHEV drivetrains are actually pretty good if you have charge in the battery - electric motivation being most excellent for metering power off road. The problem is that the Renegade has short-ish range for a large-ish battery, and you can’t charge up in the wild. It’s also decidedly average as a road car.”

Is there a Jeep Renegade hybrid?

Yes, and more specifically it’s a plug-in hybrid. It’s Jeep’s first hybrid model and the company claims it's better off-road than petrol and diesel models.

How does the Jeep Renegade hybrid work?

The Renegade 4xe (pronounced ‘four by e’) has a petrol engine at the front, an 11.4kWh battery in the middle and an electric motor at the back making it four-wheel drive. The battery is charged by plugging it into a wallbox or a domestic socket or by using the petrol engine.

What is the range of the Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid?

Jeep claims the Renegade 4xe can travel 26 miles in pure electric mode. We found this to be pretty accurate on a summer’s day but around 20 miles is a realistic average figure.

Is the Renegade PHEV a good company car?

If you’re a company car driver then the 4xe PHEV is the best option in the Renegade range because it falls into the 12% benefit-in-kind bracket. Some rivals like the Renault Captur E-TECH are in the 10% category so are even cheaper.

Does Jeep make hybrids?

Yes, and the Renegade is the first. Jeep calls its plug-in hybrid models ‘4xe’ and it has already revealed two other models – the Compass and the Wrangler 4xe. The compass will arrive in the UK in late 2021 but Jeep hasn’t decided whether it’ll offer the Wrangler 4xe in the UK, though.
