Range
The entry-level Standard Range is good for 217 miles of range, says MG, but we’d estimate that would be more like 190 miles in everyday driving.
Many buyers will fork out a bit extra for the Long Range model. In SE trim it can travel a claimed (and excellent) 281 miles, while the sportier-looking Trophy doesn’t travel as far, at a WLTP range of 270 miles. You can blame the Trophy’s racy rear wing and larger wheels for this drop in range, although it's still a similar driving range as that offered by the smaller battery Kia EV3 and VW ID.3.
In 2023, MG gave buyers even more choice and more miles per charge by adding the Extended Range version, which can travel a claimed 329 miles with a fully charged battery. In our experience, that works out to be more like 260- to 300 miles of real-world range.
There’s also a high performance MG4 called XPower. It gets the same battery pack as the Long Range, but due to its twin electric motors and prodigious power (429bhp!), the range is noticeably less than the Long Range models at 239 miles.
There's no heat pump on the MG4, which is a shame as you get it standard on rivals like the Peugeot E-308, BYD Atto 2 and Renault 4.
Battery
The MG4 comes in the choice of three battery sizes. The smallest is a 49kWh usable (51kWh total) capacity lithium iron phosphate - or LFP - battery. That's reserved for the entry-level Standard Range model, while the Long Range and XPower cars get the mid-range 62kWh (64kWh total capacity), and the Extended Range model that arrived in 2023 gets the larger 74kWh battery (77kWh total capacity). Both of the bigger batteries use lithium-ion NMC chemistry, and you can read all about the pros- and cons of LFP and NMC batteries, right here.
Charging
Charging the MG4 overnight on a typical 7kW home wallbox should take between eight- and 1 hours, depending on which battery you're charging. Hook up to a 50kW fast charger and a 20-80% top-up will take around one hour, but find a 150kW unit and things are much faster – around 35 to 40 minutes.
The MG4 will DC rapid charge at 117kW for the Standard Range, 135kW for the Long Range, while the XPower and Extended Range can manage around 140kW. Ultimately, that means that all MG4s can achieve a 100 mile top-up from a powerful enough rapid charger in around 20- to 25 minutes - maybe closer to 15 minutes if you've got the XPower or Extended Range and get lucky with ideal charging conditions.
